Who we are

Do Good Research was set up by Sophie Rankin, to promote good practice user research in the tech industry.

User research is the process of learning about people who use a product or service, so we can design things better to meet their needs.

We can help you with building user research skills in your team and setting up the environment you need to do research well. Currently, we are delivering user research projects with charities, leading workshops for teams and running regular training events for the community.

"Sophie is the best researcher we’ve ever worked with. She’s meticulous and has an amazing ability to hone in on user and organisation needs in a way that’s holistic and supportive. This means her results really open eyes to what should be done straight away to make a better user experience, but also shows the potential of longer-term changes. Her approach doesn’t just look at tasks to hand, but organisation, communication, culture and people strategy. She hand holds clients through the process and helps them do more themselves. Sophie is also incredibly approachable and easy to work with. She gets the best out of everyone she works with."

Our Projects

  • Homeless Link - Usability Testing and Knowledge Hub User Research

Homeless Link are a national membership charity for organisations working directly with people who are homeless in England.

One of the things they do is provide guidance, resources and training to support staff working in the sector.

We ran 2 rounds of research to improve the user experience of the website and wider service. The outcome was to help people access content quickly and easily and to embed user-led approaches in the organisation

Activities: Usability testing, Interviews, Google Analytics, Content Design, Content Strategy, Service Design

  • Trust for London - Redesigning the funding area

Trust for London exists to reduce poverty and inequality in London.

We led research to understand what information is important to people when applying for grant funding. This led to research insights, content strategy and new page wireframes to help the team redesign the funding area.

The outcome was to make the process easier for potential applicants deciding whether to apply and to reduce the number of unsuccessful applications.

Activities: Card sorting, usability testing, survey, data analysis, content audit, wireframes and user journeys

  • Q, The Health Foundation - Journey Mapping

Q are a community working together to improve health and care quality across the UK and Ireland.

We collaborated with Design for Joy, to help Q learn more about how people experience their community. We led research interviews, prototyped and tested ideas with members and non-members on 2 core journeys.

The outcome was improving the Join Q application journey and wider offering as well as building internal design capability

Activities: Task analysis, Google Analytics, Workshops, Interviews, Ideation, Prototype testing
